First, we need to address the fact this is a small trout for where it was caught, and yes it is wild. But that’s not the whole story. This system of lakes, rivers and man-made hydro canals is famous for producing some of the world’s biggest trout. In 2020 the new IGFA all-tackle world record brown trout weighing 44 pounds, 5 ounces was landed here. That dwarfs my trout and there are many 20 to 30-pound browns and rainbows in this system. While the fish are wild, how they get that big is up for some debate. Some say they are all pellet heads solely growing that size through feed spilled from the salmon farms that dot the canals. The more generally accepted theory it seems is that it’s a mix of the salmon feed and a highly productive and stable ecosystem provided by the canals.
