It's a common misconception to believe that scientific insect knowledge (entomology) is critical to success in fly fishing. This can be overwhelming and panic inducing to the new fly angler (I have degrees in biology and zoology and I found it overwhelming), and really annoying to the seasoned angler that doesn't know or care. The truth is that you can be a successful fly angler with zero ability to distinguish a mayfly from a caddis from a midge from a stonefly. Forget about pupa from larva from emergers. In this series I am going to try to take the viewer through increasing levels of sophistication in fly selection. Part 1, this part, provides simple approaches to fly selection for those with no or almost no entomological knowledge or no desire to gain it. Part 2 will provide basic insect identification and life cycle overviews and relate them to fly selection. Depending on how far that goes, there may or may be a Part 3 that gives even more granular detail. If there's anything in particular you'd like me to address or if you have any questions or comments, I welcome them (as long as they are polite/respectful). Thank you as always as for watching, I hope you find the video entertaining and informative.
