About this video:
In this episode of Untangled, Spencer explains why he changed his mind about fly fishing apps after years of arguing they were bad for the sport, and how beginners can use them to find new water without relying on hotspotting or fishing reports. He breaks down the difference between apps built around social feeds and river ratings and the ones built as planning tools, then walks through the three things a good fly fishing app actually tells you: where public land ends and private land begins, where the boat ramps and public access points are, and what the current streamflow data looks like. Along the way he covers why none of this information is secret to begin with, how much of it already lives on hard-to-navigate state game and fish and USGS websites, and why gathering it in one place makes trip planning easier without giving away a fishery. Spencer also answers listener questions on fly fishing etiquette when you're sharing water with other anglers, what to pack for a backcountry trip, and how breaking your wrist during the casting stroke wrecks accuracy on dry fly presentations.
