Boltz Lake Kentucky Kayak Fishing Tournament: Bass, Lightning, & Hail! Cincinnati Kayak Fishing

This day was the Cincinnati Kayak Fishing Northern Kentucky Lakes bass tournament where we got to chose between four lakes: Williamstown, Kincaid, Bullock Pen, and Boltz. I picked Boltz sight unseen partly because I enjoy little lakes and Boltz is 92 acres and has 6.6 miles of shoreline. I got one day of pre-fishing (check out my channel for that video!), and managed to get four fish on the board plus lost one jumping off. The craziest part about the day was the thunderstorms with heavy hail and lightning that came through for a few hours that were bad enough to have me taking shelter in my car.

It turned out that my pre-fishing pattern of jerkbait bass off of windy main lake points in 8 feet of water on Friday totally didn't hold up on Sunday, in the tournament the bass had moved super shallow and I could only get a bite on weedless soft plastics right up at the shoreline.

I'm really proud of my adjustment that allowed me to catch fish... sometimes I tend to get stuck on the moving baits because there is nothing more fun than a topwater, chatterbait, or crankbait bite! But this time I put down the cranking rod and actually slowed down with finesse casts and found a few bass! Just wish I had made that adjustment earlier and caught more fish! I watched my buddy, Scott, catch fish on a weightless Senko or fluke for years on our occasional bass boat trips while I threw a crankbait... I guess I finally stopped being stubborn long enough to realize how effective they are!

Thanks to Cincinnati Kayak Fishing for giving me a reason to try these awesome lakes! This trail is a super friendly, lower entry fee option great for those who want to give kayak bass tournaments a try!
