Colby and Trey hit the ice for the first time during the new ice fishing season of 2024-25. They fished together on December 6th at Beaver Dam Lake in southern Wisconsin. This was the first time both guys have ever fished this lake. Ice conditions were solid with mostly 6" of great ice but there was also open water in the center of the lake too. They were told by many friends that have ice fished this lake to just use tip-ups and not jig for walleyes since they don't eat jigs. Well...those individuals were definitely wrong. Majority of the walleye and crappies the guys caught were from jigging. Colby and Trey fished from noon to 9pm with great success. On Saturday, Colby and another friend; Cody; hit the same lake starting at 2pm. Fishing conditions shifted dramatically but there were a lot of people on the ice making lots of noise compared to Friday. Too much surface commotion can spook fish from activity engaging in tip-ups and jigging, especially on a shallow structured lake. When the crowds dwindled, fish started to actively feed. Cody had tip-up success and Colby had jigging success but no keeper walleyes were caught. Just a handful of decent size white crappies ready for the frying pan. Cody left at 7pm and Colby left at 10pm. The guys plan on walleye fishing and learning more about this lake this ice season.
