Yellowstone’s Cutthroat Comeback | Epic Fly Fishing Road Trip | EP8

This journey begins far from Yellowstone — on a family summer trip to Costa Rica — before winding through Mississippi, Arkansas, and across the American West to Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone.
Along the way, I’m introducing myself — as I am typically the person behind the camera. At 40, I’m reflecting on time, fatherhood, and the balance between work, family, and the pull to keep making these stories. I share what travel looks like behind the scenes and wrestle with why fly fishing films still matter to me — not just as adventures, but as a way to preserve memories for my friends, family, and myself.
The heart of the story unfolds on Yellowstone Lake, fishing with longtime friends Pete Erickson and Tom Jones. Pete has been guiding Tom in the Jackson Hole region for more than 30 years, and together they witnessed the near collapse — and remarkable comeback — of Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Once devastated by invasive lake trout, native cutthroat populations have rebounded thanks to years of work by the National Park Service and conservation nonprofits. Today, the fish are not only back, but larger and healthier than before.
We also fish the Snake River, where Pete and I take Mary Beth Jones out in search of Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout, a uniquely evolved native fish found only in this watershed.
Beyond the trout water, the journey moves through Wyoming backroads, quail hunting and farm ponds in Mississippi, and fishing closer to home in the Ozarks, tying together the places that shaped who I am. From still-water to rivers, from bass and crappie to wild cutthroat, fishing becomes a way to think about past, present, and future.
This story explores native trout conservation, friendship, and the passage of time, while reflecting on what’s worth holding onto as the road keeps moving forward. Tackling this project pushed my storytelling and editing farther than ever before. So thank you so much for watching — I hope you enjoy the journey! #flyfishing #yellowstoneflyfishing #wyomingflyfishing #fishing #tetons #roadtrip
