Accidentally Catching Murray Cod While Lure Fishing For Yellowbelly

A couple of good sized murray cod caught during closed season whilst targeting golden perch with smaller sized HC Lures spinnerbaits. Unfortunately the yellas didn't want to play on this day! Both cod were in excellent condition with beautiful colours, and they looked like they had been eating very well indeed.

With great respect for murray cod and their breeding habits, I stopped fishing after catching the 2nd cod. Cod can forgo spawning if disturbed too much, and at this time of year there's a chance they will abandon their nest if they feel too threatened. You will notice that I only got a very quick look at each cod before quickly returning them to the water with the hope of distressing them as little as possible. If it was summertime and cod season was open, I probably would have got a quick photo and measurement of these lovely fat fish, but on this occasion during the closed season I settled for a few seconds of video footage before getting them swimming.
